between yes and no what is the difference? |
between good and evil how far is the distance? |
how trivial to fear whatever it is that others do |
|
| the masses are grinning happily today |
munching beef, pork, and lamb |
hiking up the spring terraces |
||
| I alone am sluggish, showing no joy |
growing but not yet able to choose, |
a baby that still doesn't know how to smile, |
drifting idly as if I had no home |
|
| everyone has had too much to eat, |
I alone seem to have lost everything |
my mind stares stupidly, I'm sleepy |
ordinary people seem sharp, smart |
|
| ordinary people make bright distinctions |
I muddle through, a rowboat on open seas |
everyone else has an active aim |
I'm numb, a hick from the outback |
|
| I'm a babe in these unnatural woods |
but I drink Mother Nature's milk. |
