Goodbye documents, hello objects! |
RantsMoving onto the Web forces us to reconsider the way we talk to our audiences. Suddenly they can respond. More, they can dictate what we deliver. Personalization gives authorial power to our visitors. We are forced to join a conversation, listening as often as we talk. How much more human than publishing a book! We swap ideas, working our way through an electronic interface. We no longer work in documents, though. We exchange objects. Each object tells its own story, carries its own content, works toward its own goal. But in a rapid-fire interaction, we do not have time for full-length documents. At least, we put off reading them until we are absolutely sure they relate to our concerns. Mostly, we deal with little bits, tiny chunks of content--menu items, links, headings. We postpone actual reading as long as we can. In the meantime, we use these bits of text, but we do not read--until we have to. These rants, longish ramblings and expostulations, are our campaign for a new way of thinking about, and writing the text we see on the web. |
